In 2017, after working as a law enforcement & firearms instructor for a number of years, I was offered the opportunity of a lifetime, to help design and build a world-class shooting range & firearms training school from essentially scratch. We first designed and built a 33,000 square foot range facility, and a year after it was completed, we broke ground on a 22,000 square foot addition of my design. When it was all complete, we had constructed a 55,000 square-foot training facility with four state of the art, indoor live-fire shooting ranges, classrooms, secure arms storage, an NLTA shoothouse, a 300-degree video simulator, employee office, breakrooms, and retail space. At the same time, I had the opportunity to manage a 360 acre outdoor property with event barn that we constructed a 1,000 yard range and covered firing line on.
When the facility was complete, there was equipment to order, staff to hire, and countless procedures to implement on safety, security, lead hazards, emergency procedures, range rules, maintenance and more. During my time there, we conducted training and shooting events for over 3,000 shooters from civilian, military and law enforcement backgrounds - with no injuries or accidents and outstanding reviews across the board.
There is nothing like first hand experience when managing such a large scale project, and we found that even when working with range manufacturers and contracts with prior experience building shooting ranges, it was easy for critical components of the range to be overlooked, which resulted in costly change orders, re-designs or modifications that had to be made to our building or how we conducted training. HVAC systems, lighting, lead contamination, floor construction, noise, acoustic materials, zoning, building materials, fire codes, ADA compliance and construction practices were all areas that required additional attention because we did not have anyone who had built a range before advocating for our interests.
Whether you are building a commercial range facility, or constructing a training center for a school or government agency, a small investment in hiring an experienced consultant to review your design and ensure critical details are not overlooked can save you costly change orders, future renovation costs or worse - from having a multi-million dollars facility that does not meet the needs of your customers or staff.
